Be More Chill

Earlier this year, the Be More Chill graphic novel was released! I love this musical so much so it was great to see it in a book format. Now, it has the honor to be included in my books and musical series!

More Than Survive

In "More Than Survive," Jeremy talks about how he just wants to fit in and survive. At the beginning of Miss. Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children, Jacob feels like he would never be anything more than normal.
Jacob Portman was always told stories of his grandfather's childhood. His stories were full of kids with amazing powers who lived in a big house run by Miss. Peregrine. There were invisible boys and girls who could make fire with their hands in his grandfather's stories. Jacob is convinced that the stories are just fairy tales until his visits the small island his grandfather grew up on.  There he meets the children he grew up hearing stories about. There are dangerous monsters after Miss. Peregrine and Jacob led them right to her. Now, Jacob and his new friends must save her and the whole peculiar world.

I Love Play Rehearsal

Christine is one of those people who are always happy and you can really see that in this song. Like Christine, Glory Bea from Blue Skies is so annoyingly optimistic.
Glory Bea needs a miracle. And one might just be on its way. It's been 3 years since the war ended and her father still hasn't returned to their home in a small town in Texas. Soon the Texas Merci Boxcar is making its stop in her town. And on Valentine's Day, the day her parents got married. It's the perfect time for a miracle to happen. But the rest of her family is moving on. They've come to the conclusion that her dad is never coming back. And her mom may be falling in love again.

Two-Player Game

Micheal and Jeremey are an iconic duo. In Warbringer, Alia and Diana have such a great friendship that I just adored!
Diana is the daughter of immortals. Living with the legendary Amazons, Diana has wanted nothing more than to prove her worth to her sisters. She finally gets the chance to be a hero when she discovers Alia moments after ship weck. By saving the girl, Diana is risking everything including exile. She discovers Alia is a Warbringer, the direct decedent of Helen of Troy. People are hunting Alia. They would do anything to see her dead. But it's up to her and Diana to stop an impending war.

Be More Chill Part 1

Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini
Be More Chill had to be mentioned at least once in this post so here it is.
Jeremy Heere couldn't be more than a loser. His hopeless crush on Christine seems to be getting nowhere. Then, Jeremy finds out about the Squip. The Squip is a super-computer pill that will help you be cool and chill. Thinking that it's the only way to make Christine like him, it buys it. But it isn't long until Jeremy discovers that there's a dark side to the Squip.

Do You Wanna Ride?

I feel like some of the side characters from The Best Laid Plans would get along great with Brooke and Chloe.
Keely is the last virgin in her grade. She goes to a school full of hot guys but none have ever hit on her. But then she meets James Dean, a college student. Soon, she is catapulted into a world of crushes, relationships, and drinking. But another lover approaches and Keely must decide between the boy of her dreams and the one she never imagined.

Be More Chill Part 2

Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam
I read Punching the Air a few months ago and one of the things that stuck with me most was how Amal used art and poetry as an outlet to calm down and be chill.
Amal Shahid didn't commit the crime but that doesn't change the fact that he's sent to prison anyway. Through his art and poetry, he's able to express himself. Amal uses his creativity, to tell the truth, his truth.

A Guy That I'd Kinda Be Into

I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee
If we totally ignore the last line of the song, I'll Be the One is the perfect fit for "A Guy That I'd Kinda Be Into." When it comes to Christine's part in the song, I could totally see Skye singing it about Henry.
Skye's been told her whole life that fat girls can't dance. Despite the years of negative comments from her mother, Skye learns to love her body. She dreams of becoming a K-Pop icon and when she finds out about the TV competition You're My Shining Star she knows that this is finally her chance. However, Skye didn't expect her fellow competitor, Henry Cho, to be so cute and charming.

Upgrade

In Charming as a Verb, Henri is determined to make it to the top. In "Upgrade," it's clear that Jeremy has the same motive as he pushes Micheal out of his life.
Henri Halitwagner has always been able to charm anyone. Anyone except Corinne. When she discovers his less than honest dog-walking scheme, Corinne blackmails Henri into helping her change her image. What started out as a mutual hustle to survive their last year of high school turns into a blooming romance.

Halloween

"Halloween" is one big party song and if I've read any book that put's me in a party mode, it's The Mall. Set in the 90s, Cassie spends her summer running around the mall.
The summer of '91 is turning out to be the worst yet. After getting over Mono, Cassie is dumped by her boyfriend, fired from her job, and her parents are getting a divorce. She has a few months to spare before she runs off to Barnard College and starts the future she's always planned for- except she no longer has the plan which went away with her ex. Cassie gets hired at Bellarosa Boutique and things start to look up. Soon she and her friend Drea are on the hunt of the summer for a mysterious treasure.

Do You Wanna Hang?

I had such a hard time trying to find a book for "Do You Wanna Hang." Finally, I settled on The Year After You because like Chloe and Brooke, a guy got in the way of Cara and G's friendship.
G died. But she survived. This hurts Cara every day. Everything. She is consumed by guilt and grief. Nine months later, Cara is shipped off to a boarding school in Switzerland. Cara is determined to make sure no one knows about the accident. But her new classmates, Ren and Hector, won't let that happen. They won't let her close herself off from the rest of the world. After she built her walls so carefully, Ren and Hector come into her life to break them down. A little part of Cara even wants them too. Hector seems to understand Cara like no one else. But the closer Hector gets, the more the truth starts to slip away. If admitting her mistake means letting go of G, she's not sure she's ready a second chance. Or if she even deserves one.

Micheal in the Bathroom

If you're a big fan of Broadway then you probably already know the connection between this song and book. "Micheal in the Bathroom" is a song about feeling like you don't belong. Evan couldn't be more of an outcast before Connor died.
Evan Hansen has never been important before. He's been invisible his whole life. Connor Murphy felt the same way. But then Connor commits suicide with a letter addressed to Evan in his pocket. A letter that Evan wrote to himself. When the Murphys find it, they are convinced that Evan was Connors's one and only friend. He thought he was giving the Murphys what they needed. Evan thought that he could make everything easier for everyone. All he did was dig himself deeper into the lie he created.

The Smartphone Hour (Rich Set a Fire)

Though "Smartphone Hour" and All American Boys have completely different themes, one thing tying them together is the fact that information travels fast. Like how the news of Rich's fire spread fast, everyone seemed to find out quickly about what happened to Rashad.
Rashad has never committed a crime before. But that doesn't stop a cop from beating him senseless on the sidewalk outside of Jerry's. Then there's Quinn. The kid who watched it all happen. The kid who did nothing to stop it. He doesn't want anyone to know he just watched as his classmate laid on the ground defenseless. now these boys have to face the unavoidable truth of racism and police brutality.

The Pitiful Children

The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant
I love this song! "The Pitiful Children" has such a cool beat. The book I'm paring with this song is The Court of Miracles. Based on Les Mis, it's no surprise that everyone in this book is, well, pitiful.
Nina is part of the Guild of Thieves.  Her midnight robberies were the only thing keeping her from meeting the same fate as her sister Azelma. When her adopted sister, Cosette (known as Ettie), catches the eye of the Tiger, the feared Lord of the Guild of Flesh. Nina becomes determined to keep Ettie safe before she can meet a fate worse than death. Their journey takes the girls from the darkest corners of the Miracle Court to the fabulous palace of King Louis XVII. Nina soon finds that saving her sister comes with a cost. If she goes through with her plans, Nina will set off a war between the guilds.

The Pants Song

Jeremy's dad finally comes through for him in this song. All of Liv's life, her father
Olive (aka Liv) hasn't seen her father since she was eight. But all that changes when she receives a postcard in the mail. Liv's dad wants her to fly all the way to Greece to shoot a documentary for National Geographic. Together, they're going to finally find Atlantis, the lost city that they bonded over when Liv was little. She isn't totally thrilled at first. Then she meets Theo, her father's cute protege. In just ten days, Liv learns that lost things can be found, including Atlantis.

The Play

Ever listen to a song that is so weird you can't help but cringe? I remember this one part from Maybe a Mermaid that made me cringe so hard I had to take a break from reading.
Anthoni Gillis has always wanted a True Blue Friend. But it has been hard to find one when every year you're in a different city. Anthoni travels with her mom, selling Beauty & the Bee products. When Anthoni shows up in Eagle Waters, she might finally have a chance to find her Ture Blue Friend. She's come up with a foolproof plan to making life-long friends. And there are no maybes about it. When local rumors about the Bolay Mermaid surface, Anothoni's plans might just change. Now Anthoni will be roped into a summer full of mysteries, new friends, and maybe a mermaid.

Voices In My Head

Fairest of All is like a reverse "Voices In My Head." While Jeremy learns to use his own voice, the Evil Queen's is taken away and the Odd Sisters start filling her head with dark ideas.
While she may seem like a jealous queen after a young girl's beauty, she is so much more. They may have been logic and heartache behind the Queen's attempts on the sweet girl's life. The Queen struggles with her looks and the trauma from her childhood helps her accept the fact that she must become the fairest of them all.
