April Book Haul

Image
At the beginning of April, I told myself I wouldn't buy any books this month. That rule didn't last long... I ended up getting a total of seventeen books which I know! It sounds like a lot because it is a lot! Stalking Jack the Ripper  series by Kerris Maniscalco There's been so much hype around the Stalking Jack the Ripper  series and just the title alone sounds so cool! I can't wait to read this series! Goodreads Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege, stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life. Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to

What role would you play in Snow White? Quiz!

Image
I've read a lot of YA retellings, but The Evil Queen  is by far my favorite. This book took a twist on the retelling. In The Evil Queen, Snow White  was a prophecy of the future. The whole time, Everly couldn't stop wondering which role she and her companions played. This got me wondering, what role would I have played? About The Evil Queen  Everly Morrow grew up in the mortal world. She was always an outsider, hated by everyone but her sister and mother. In the realm of Enchantia, fairytales are prophecies of the future. After one look through a mirror, Everly finds out she destined to the Evil Queen. Everly doesn't want to be evil. But can she resist the temperature, or will she be consumed by power? Full review

Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson

Image
After her dad cancels on her birthday dinner, Stevie and her friend Kat choose to go to New York for the evening to see a show and have dinner at Josephine's. The only problem is that the two have no phones, family drama sets them on a journey across the city, and somehow they ended up with a pomeranian. Take Me Home Tonight was so much better than I thought it was going to be. I first picked this up because the title reminded me of that song by Eddie Money. Once I read the synopsis though, this book became a priority for me to read. Theatre nerds getting lost in New York? What could be better?  I read this book so much faster than I thought I would. Once I picked it up, I was hooked. Take Me Home Tonight  was exactly the kind of light-hearted contemporary I needed right now. I loved Kat and Stevie. There were so many sides to them and they were anything but dull. I think these two win the award for my favorite fictional friendship. I liked the little bit of romance in this book a

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Image
In Tris's dystopian world, everyone is split up into five factions: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. Once a year, all sixteen-year-olds choose what faction they will live the rest of their life in. Tris switches from Abnegation to Dauntless. During intuition, she discovers some shocking news about Erudite's plans for the factions. News that could lead to distrution. Also theirs a weird and creepy romance in this book between Tris and Four. *shudders* Divergent was certainly... interesting. For the past two years, my friends couldn't stop raving about this book. After much relcutence, I finally gave in and read this book. I have mixed feelings to say the least. I'll start off with the negative, but I have plenty of positive things to say about Divergent  too! For one thing, the fractions were really hard to keep track of. I couldn't remember any of the names so eventually I just started calling them farmers (Candor), nice people (Abnegation), tough

Don't Tell the Nazis by Marsha Forchuk Skaypuch

Image
Krystia lives in a small village in Ukraine. Just when the Russian Soviets get kicked out, they think all their problems are solved. Only days later do the German Nazis arrive. At first, things seem calm but then panic rises. The Nazis start to threaten Krystia's friends, family, and everything she knows. German people have been moving into the village and soon it becomes unrecognizable. It gets worse and Krystia's family soon takes in a family of Jews.     I wasn't expecting to like Don't Tell the Nazis  as much as I did. I found that I cared a lot about Krystia and her story. I fell right into this book. I like to read about other places than Germany because it's so interesting to see how they dealt with all this Nazi stuff. Most WWII stories take place in Germany and while those books are still good, I like seeing other countries too.      Small spoiler: almost everyone in this book dies. It was so frustrating! I wanted Krystia to get a happy ending with her whol

War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

Image
After witnessing Cal's stunning betrayal, Mare is determined to protect her heart above all else. With the Lakelander army on his side, Maven's power only seems to be growing. Allied with Norta and Montfort, is finally time for the Scarlet Gaurd to rise red as the dawn and end this war once and for all. I liked War Storm.  It's not my favorite book in the Red Queen series but not my least favorite either. I love that there were so many different POVs. It definitely added to how much I enjoyed the book. I got to read from Mare, Evangeline, Iris, Cal, and Maven's prespective. I think Evangeline's chapters were my favorites. Her romance with a certain character who shall remain nameless ('cuz spoilers) was adorable. I definitely wanted to see more of it and it was much more interesting than the whole Cal and Mare thing. I really enjoyed Maven's two chapters. I wasn't expecting to get to read his perspective, but I love that Victoria Aveyard chose to includ

Recent Reads

Image
In the past two weeks, I've read so many books so this Recent Reads post will already be long enough without a full introduction! Broken Throne  by Victoria Aveyard Dates read: April 7 - April 9 The companion novel to the Red Queen  series has surprisingly been my least favorite yet. The only novella that I really enjoyed was Iron Heart. The Bookwanders  by Anna James Dates read: April 9 - April 10 This book was so much better than I thought it would be! I couldn't put it down. I wouldn't describe this book as gripping, but the plot certainly moved fast enough to keep me interested.  The Bookwanders  was so lighthearted and after recently dealing with all the politics in  War Storm  and  Broken Throne , it was a nice break. Synopsis: Tilly's mother disappeared almost ten years ago. Ten years later, Tilly starts to experience strange things. Anne of Green Gables and Alice from Wonderland have started appearing in her family's bookshop, Pages and Co. to make things e

Hazel and Grey by Nic Stone

Image
Hazel's stepfather is nothing but controlling. Forbin from seeing her boyfriend, Hazel defies him and spends the night with Grey anyway. When the two get lost in the woods, a large mansion looks inviting enough to spend the night in.     Before I start talking about this book I just want to give out a quick trigger warning because there are some sensitive topics explored in the book.      Hazel and Grey  is great a book! I really liked both of the main characters and found their romance cute. I love the Faraway series! It's such a fun collection of novellas.       The only criticism I have is the narration kept jumping back and forth in time. One moment we would be at the mansion and then the next it would jump back to hours earlier. I have no problem with flashbacks I just think the book would have read much more smoothly if told in the      Nic Stone has been an author I've wanted to try for a while and I'm so happy I finally got the chance to read one of her books! The Glass Queen by Gena Showalter

Image
Ashleigh was born with a weak heart. After being deemed unfit to rule, she's cast aside by her family and deemed the Glass Princess. One day, she's summoned by her father. Ashleigh learns that she's fated to be Cinderella. Ashleigh's not so sure Cinderellas who she's supposed to be. After falling deeply in love with an avion named Saxon, they find that they have bigger things to deal with when they find a phantom possessing Ashleigh's body. They'll need to free her before they can finally save Sevron.     l loved The Evil Queen  and I was so excited to read the sequel, The Glass Queen.  Unfortunately, I didn't end up loving this book as much as its predecessor.  The Glass Queen was really good at first, but eventually, some parts became a little slow.     I liked that the book was told from both Ashleigh's and Saxon's perspectives. Towards the end of the book, Saxon's chapters became a little boring. Another part about this book I didn't

The Evil Queen Playlist

Image
I'm still raving about The Evil Queen ! It was so unbelievably good and I just can't deal with how much I loved this book. The Evil Queen  gave me a whole new love for reading. Also, Everly and Roth are such a cute couple! Like I did with all my other favorite books, I created a music playlist that is perfect for The Evil Queen . Stone Cold- Demi Lavato I Did Something Bad- Taylor Swift Control- Halsey you should see me in a crown- Billie Eilish Power- Katy Perry Nicotine- Panic! at the Disco Bad Blood- Taylor Swift About The Evil Queen Everly Morrow grew up in the mortal world. She was always an outsider, hated by everyone but her sister and mother. In the realm of Enchantia, fairytales are prophecies of the future. Be More Chill

Image
Earlier this year, the Be More Chill graphic novel was released! I love this musical so much so it was great to see it in a book format. Now, it has the honor to be included in my books and musical series! More Than Survive Miss. Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs      In "More Than Survive," Jeremy talks about how he just wants to fit in and survive. At the beginning of  Miss. Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children , Jacob feels like he would never be anything more than normal.      Jacob Portman was always told stories of his grandfather's childhood. His stories were full of kids with amazing powers who lived in a big house run by Miss. Peregrine. There were invisible boys and girls who could make fire with their hands in his grandfather's stories. Jacob is convinced that the stories are just fairy tales until his visits the small island his grandfather grew up on.  There he meets the children he grew up hearing stories about. There are dangerous
