Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan

Image
Nyda can talk to gods. Malachaisz is a monster with secrets to hide. Serefin is the high prince. The three couldn't be more different, but the fate of their world rests in their hands. To stop a war, they have to assassinate a king. I can't begin to describe how disappointed I was by this book. I was so excited to read Wicked Saints . I've heard nothing but praise and good things about it. The cover was gorgeous and the book even had deckled edges. I thought I would love this book but I couldn't have been more wrong.  The beginning was really confusing. Most of the book was dull and boring. The world-building wasn't very good. The magic system could also be really confusing at times. Emily A. Duncan created a whole new language for this book and there were no translations. At all.  I found that really annoying. For the most part, the characters were dull too. For the first half, they all had no emotional drive. I didn't like Serefin very much. Nadya and Malacha

Rebel Angels by Libba Bray

Christmas has finally arrived and Gemma Doyle can't wait to get away from Spence Academy. Gemma is eager to spend time with her friends in London and see her family. Before she can even ring in the New Year though, Gemma and her friends are facing a new danger threatening the Realms. At the same time, Gemma has seemed to catch the eye of the charming Simon Middleton. I read this series out of order- opps. So Rebel Angels  is actually the first book in the Gemma Doyle  trilogy I read and I really enjoyed it. I considered giving this book 4 stars but decided on 3. Rebel Angels  is much more entertaining than the first book in this series. The characters in this book are also so much better! Considering the time period, Gemma has a lot of spunk. She is very stubborn and has zero self-control. That last part does get annoying at times. Gemma is maybe too stubborn though. She does the opposite of everything people tell her to do and most of the time, it ends badly. Felicity and Ann got

All I Want For Christmas is the Boy I Can't Have by Chelsea Bobulski

Ilsa has been obsessed with the idea of love ever since she was little. She also loves helping out her mom's wedding planning business. Riddle's Bridal Boutique and Wedding Planning have just gotten their biggest break yet: a high society millionaire. What Isla doesn't expect is for the bride's brother to be so charming. August Harker's life has been all planned out for him but as he and Isla become closer, he starts to find himself and Isla starts to find the true love she's always dreamed about. The third installment in the All I Want For Christmas series was just as wholesome and cute as the first two. This series is the perfect thing to get me in the holiday spirit. I feel like this whole series would make a perfect Christmas gift for romance lovers. So far, Isla and August have been my least favorite couple in this series. They seemed to fall in love instantly and the whole "being in love with a guy who already has a girlfriend" trope was just a

Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen

Image
Sarah may look German, but she's Jewish. Shortly after her mother was shot at checkpoint, she meets a man who can change her future. He's part of the rebellion against the Nazi regime and recruits Sarah as a spy. Sarah will pose as Ursala Haller, a girl attending a school full of the daughters of the top Nazo soldiers.      For my English class, we had to pick a historical fiction book to read. Out of the millions on my TBR, I chose Orphan Monster Spy . The book went by slowly and I think it's because I was reading it for school. I'm not sure why but I never enjoy books as much when I read them for class. I find that I become more focused on reading it for class rather than enjoying it for myself.     The story was great. It was hard to get into the story but when I did, I really enjoyed it. I know there's a second book in the series and I'm not sure if I want to read it. I think I will give Darling Devil Spy a  try though because I did end up enjoying Orphan Mo

You've Reached Sam by Dustin Thao

Julie had her future planned out. She wanted to move out of her small town with her boyfriend, but then Sam died. Heartbroken Julie can barely pull herself out of bed, let alone go to the funerals and vigils held in Sam's honor. One night, Julie becomes so overcome with grief that she calls Sam. And Sam picks up. Hearing his voice makes it even harder to move on and soon, Julie finds herself relying on Sam's calls. But how long does Julie have before their connection breaks and she loses Sam forever? I went into this book expecting it to break me. And it did. You've Reached Sam  was so sad! This book was so full of emotion. If you liked The Year After You , I definitely recommend reading this. Both books were so overcome with grief. I just couldn't with that ending! Usually, I prefer plot-driven stories, but the plot isn't super heavy. The story focuses more on the characters though the story was pretty gripping. Each character in this book was written so well. The

All I Want For Christmas is the Girl in Charge by Chelsea Bobulski

Everly Waverly is co-directing and staring as Elizabeth Bennet as in her own stage adaptation of   Pride and Prejudice.  The only problem is Greg Baily, the boy who was supposed to play Darcy, broke his leg and won't be able to perform. Beckett Hawthorne has his own problems to worry about. He doesn't have any interest in  Pride and Prejudice  and he definitely doesn't want to play Mr. Darcy, but when he mentions the play to his social worker (big mistake), she pressures him into joining the cast. As the opening night gets closer, Beckett and Everly start to fall in love. I love the dual POVs and small enemies to lovers trope included in this book. Everly and Beckett were such a cute couple! The characters had great chemistry and I loved every interaction between them. They had great witty banter. I also like the overlapping characters in this series. It was so great to see Graham didn't totally mess up everyone's lives for good in  All I Want For Christmas is th

Unbirthday by Liz Braswell

Image
What if Wonderland was in peril and Alice was very, very late ? Alice may not be like every other girl in Kenxford, and she's perfectly fine with that. While her sister may concern herself with boys and rallies, Alice has much more important matters on her hands. Such as Wonderland. Eleven years after visiting the curious land, Alice gets an urgent message from some of its inhabitants. Wonderland is in peril, and Alice is very very late. Unbirthday was such a great book! The writing in Unbirthday  seemed a bit different than in Braswell's other books but it suited Wonderland perfectly. The epilogue also had an interesting setup and was more of a Q & A. Again, this was perfect for a story that takes place in Wonderland. I  wish there was more romance in this book. There was so much potential between Alice and Mr. Katz. Though we did get a few kisses, there could have been so much more! I wished that Alice had taken Katz to Wonderland with her. Besides the missing romance, th

Tidesong by Wendy Xu

Sophie is a young witch whose grandmother and mother have sent her off to study magic with her aunt before her audition for the Royal Magic Academy. The only problem is Sophie's magic is unreliable and weak. Despite to prove herself, Sophie attempts a complicated spell on her own, but it goes terribly wrong. Sophie accidentally engages her magic with a young sea dragon named Lir. Lir is now trapped on land and can't remember anything that happened before Sophie's failed spell. With his help, Sophie could pass her entrance exams, but it would mean endangering Lir in the process.  The illustrations in this graphic novel are beautiful, I found the actual story lacking a bit. I originally picked this up because I loved the Mooncakes  graphic novel so much, but Tidesong just wasn't as interesting. I thought the plot was boring. Overall, this book just felt like it was missing something. Like I said, the artwork was great. Definitely my favorite part of the book. The color p

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

After the murder of her mother, Gemma Doyle is shipped off to Spence Academy in England. Gemma starts getting strange visions of the future. To make things worse, a strange man has been watching her. As Gemma embraces her newfound power, she starts to uncover the dark secrets surrounding Spence. I kind of read this series out of order, but let's just ignore that tiny fact. The main reason I decided to read this book is because I've heard so many great things about Libba Bray's books! I found this book and the third one at Reread Books for a total of $10. I got book 2 for free so I figured might as well read the whole trilogy! A Great and Terrible Beauty left me a little disappointed. As usual, I'll start off by talking about what I liked. A Great and Terrible Beauty  is a gothic fantasy set in 1893, England. The plot of this book was super intriguing. I liked getting to investigate the mystery of Mary Dowd through reading her journals. Though it was a little slow, I th

What District of Panem Woud You Live In?

Image
Are you still obsessed with The Hunger Games?  I know I am! While I was binging the movies earlier, I started thinking, what district would I live in? That's why I made this quiz. Make sure to tell me your district in the comments! About The Hunger Games The Hunger Games is a tradition in the country of Panem. To the Capitol, it's fun and entertaining. To Katniss, it's a nightmare. Each of the twelve districts pulls one boy and one girl to fight to the death on live TV. When Katniss is chosen, it seems like her life is ending. She goes in the games with Peeta by her side as they become the star-crossed lovers of District Twelve. But only can be the victor.  My full review

The Enchantress Returns by Chris Colfer

Image
Alex and Connor think of the Land of Stories every day. They long for the magical adventure they once had. One day, they get their wish. After their mother gets kidnapped by the feared Enchantress, Alex and Connor find a way back to the Land of Stories. With the help of Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, Jack, and Froggy, the twins set out on a quest to complete the Wand of Wonderment- the only thing that can defeat the Enchantress. I love how Chris Colfer can make me have sympathy for any villain. The Evil Queen, Esma, the Snow Queen- they all have such tragic backstories. I don't think I could ever hate any of his characters for very long. The characters are so lovable. Red and Connor are so funny. Alex and Connor balance each other out so well. Alex is always so serious and worried while Connor adds some much-needed comic relief. The two are so different but their personalities work so well. The story is always moving which I love. The world-building is amazing. I love how Colfer cra

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

Image
The last place Jamie Watson wants to be is at Sherringford, a boarding school in Connecticut. However, things seem to get more interesting when he meets Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective's great-great-great-granddaughter. She's not only inherited Sherlock's intelligence but his love of solving crimes too. When a student at Sherringford is suspiciously murdered, blame is instantly placed on Charlotte and Jamie. Together, the two will have to work tirelessly to clear their names and solve this mystery before it is too late. I am such a huge fan of both the original Sherlock Holmes  series and the BBC show Sherlock  so naturally, I had to read A Study in Charlotte . This book was great! I need the sequel now! I can't believe I've heard anything about the Charlotte Holmes  series. This book definitely deserves more hype.  A Study in Charlotte quite literally had me holding my breath. This was such a great mystery and I didn't see that ending coming! I totally

All I Want For Christmas is the Girl Next Door by Chelsea Bobulski

Image
Graham has been in love with the girl next door ever since she moved in. The only problem is she's been dating his best friend, Jeremy, for the past two years. Then, one night, everything changes as Graham makes a wish on a shooting star. All he wants for Christmas is Sarah Clarke. And his wish comes true. When Graham wakes up the next day, he finds that he's been dating Sarah for the past two years. Graham's wish would have only come true if he and Sarah were meant to be together, but he and Sarah bring out the worst in each other. Not to mention Graham's falling for the new girl in town.  If you ignore the fact that literally EVERYONE was emotionally cheating on one another, this was a pretty okay book. I swear this book had more drama than Glee . On the bright side, All I Want For Christmas is the Girl Next Door  wasn't boring at all, though the book was really predictable. I called that ending on page 17. On top of the preditcablity, it was a bit repetive. For

The City Beautiful by Aden Polydoros

Image
Chicago, 1893. In the midsts of the World Fair, Alter Rosen's best friend, Yakov, is found dead. He is the latest in the long line of murdered Jewish boys. While the rest of the city is still celebrating, Alter is living a nightmare. He is possessed by Yakov's dybbuk. The only way to free both him and Yakov is to find who really killed him. Alter is thrust into a world of secrets and danger only to find himself once more in the arms of Frankie, a boy who means more to Alter than he could ever admit. With the days dwindling down until the dybbuk takes over Alter completely, the boys race to track down the killer before he kills them first. Wow, this is the best historical fiction I've read in a while. I love reading gay romances set in the past! And to make it even better, The City Beautiful  included a serial killer mystery. If that's still not enough to convince you to read this book, it's also gothic! Aden Polydoros definitely delivered on this one! I loved the s

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

Image
August Flynn wants more than anything to be human. But he is a monster, a Suni to be exact. He uses his music to bring people to their knees. Kate is the daughter of the most powerful man in V-City. For the first time in years, Kate Harker is back in V-City, attending high school with the rest of the teens in Verity. She starts to notice odd things about her classmate. At the time of reading This Savage Song (last November), I was going through books really slowly. I read this book in four days. This Savage Song  really captured my attention. I couldn't put it down. I had read more in those four days than I did in a week. I know that Kate and August are supposed to fall for each other, but there was really no romantic moments. There was barely any romantic tension between them. I did not ship these two characters. I liked them both individually but not together. I also found that I didn't love the characters as much as I usually do. I liked them, but I didn't love them. It

The Prom by Saundra Mitchell

Image
All Emma wants to do before graduation is to dance with her girlfriend at senior prom. But everyone in her small Indiana town won't let that happen. Alyssa Greene is the pretty, popular girl at school. She seems like the perfect daughter, but she has a secret. She's been dating Emma for the past year and a half. When people find out that Emma plans to bring a girl as her date, Alyssa's mom (who is president of the PTA) threatens to cancel the prom. The only thing that can save this prom is two Broadway legends: Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman. My favorite movie of 2020 was The Prom . It was such a great movie starring a lot of my favorite actors. I always have the soundtrack on repeat so needless to say, my hopes for this book were very high. The most disappointing thing about this book was that Trent and Angie were left out of the book. "Love Thy Neighbor" was one of my favorite songs from the musical and book adaptation of this song just wasn't the same wi
