Recent Reads

In the past two weeks, I've read so many books so this Recent Reads post will already be long enough without a full introduction!

Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard

Dates read: April 7 - April 9

The companion novel to the Red Queen series has surprisingly been my least favorite yet. The only novella that I really enjoyed was Iron Heart.

The Bookwanders by Anna James

Dates read: April 9 - April 10

This book was so much better than I thought it would be! I couldn't put it down. I wouldn't describe this book as gripping, but the plot certainly moved fast enough to keep me interested. The Bookwanders was so lighthearted and after recently dealing with all the politics in War Storm and Broken Throne, it was a nice break.

Synopsis:

Tilly's mother disappeared almost ten years ago. Ten years later, Tilly starts to experience strange things. Anne of Green Gables and Alice from Wonderland have started appearing in her family's bookshop, Pages and Co. to make things even weirder, Tilly finds she has the ability to travel into Anne and Alice's stories. Tilly's new discovery is fun at first, but danger lurks at every turn...

The Lost Fairytales by Anna James

Dates read: April 10 - April 11

The second book in the Pages and Co. series was a little disappointing. It seemed to have no real plot for a large chunk of it and it was a little more boring. I would have liked to see some real mother/daughter bonding time between Tilly and Bea.

Synopsis:

Tilly and Oskar are bookwanderers. They can travel into any book they want, but their powers are put to the test when fairytales start leaking book magic and causing chaos. While on a trip to Paris, the pair travel into a book of fairytales only to find that the characters are getting lost in the wrong story and mysterious plot holes are opening.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Dates read: February 17 - April 13

To Kill a Mockingbird was beautiful and eye-opening. I'm so happy I got to read this book for class.

Synopsis:

In the small town of Maycomb, Alabama, Scout spends her summer days playing games with her older brother, Jem, and friend, Dill. Her father, Atticus, is a lawyer and when he takes on the case of Tom Robinson, things only become harder for Scout and Jem. They soon have to face the undeniable truth of racism in the south.

Infinity Son by Adam Silvera

Dates read:

I had such high hopes for Infinity Son, but after reading it, I was so disappointed. There were so many things wrong with this book but I'll explain them in my upcoming review. I don't think I'll read Infinity Reaper.

Synopsis:

Emil and Brighton have always idolized the Spell Walkers. The Spell Walkers are a group of vigilante group bent on riding the world of specters. While the Spell Walkers and celestials are born with magical powers, the specters take them. Brighton wants so badly to join their ranks so when Emil finds that he has powers of his own, Brighton can't help but feel a little jealous. The brothers are recruited by the Spell Walkers to help take down Luna.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Dates read: April 7 - April 15

I've heard so many great things about Divergent, but I couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed by it. I think the romanced sucked, but other than that it was okay.

Synopsis:

In Tris's dystopian world, everyone is split up into five factions: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. Once a year, all sixteen-year-olds choose what faction they will live the rest of their life in. Tris switches from Abnegation to Dauntless. During intuition, she discovers some shocking news about Erudite's plans for the factions. News that could lead to destruction.

Instant Karma by Marissa Myers

Dates read: April 14 - April 16

Out of all the books I've talked about in this post, I can say that Instant Karma was the best out of all of them. This was such a fun contemporary and defiantly my favorite out of all of Marissa Myers's books.

Synopsis:

Prudence is an overachiever and wants more than just a life in her small coastal town of Fortuna Bay. One day, Pru wakes up to find that she has the power to intact instant karma on anyone she wishes. While Pru is hard at work punishing anyone she pleases, her powers seem to constantly backfire on one person: Quint Erickson. When Pru finds herself working at an animal rescue center, she uncovers the truth of why her powers won't work on Quint and why the rescue seems to be struggling so much.

The Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket

Dates read: April 16 - April 17

for the past few months, I've been slowly working my way through A Series of Unfortunate Events. I loved the Netflix adaptation but I think out of all the books so far, The Miserable Mill has been my least favorite.

Synopsis:

As Violet, Klaus, and Sunny continue their journey, they are sent to Platryville to at a lumber mill. Lucky Smells brings them nothing but disaster and unhappiness as Count Olaf lurks in the shadows, waiting for them.

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

Dates read: April 16 - April 18

This modern-day retelling of Sherlock Holmes was amazing. In my last Recent Reads post, I talked about A Study in Scarlet but A Study in Charlotte was even better than Arthur Conan Doyle's original novels.

Synopsis:

The last place Jamie Watson wants to be is at Sherringford, a boarding school in Connecticut. However, things seem to get more interesting when he meets Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective's great-great-great-granddaughter. She's not only inherited Sherlock's intelligence but his love of solving crimes too. When a student at Sherringford is suspiciously murdered, blame is instantly placed on Charlotte and Jamie. Together, the two will have to work tirelessly to clear their names and solve this mystery before it is too late.

Bloom by Kevin Panetta

Dates read: April 18 - April 19

I loved this graphic novel! Ari and Hector were so cute together! My heart absolutely screamed with joy while reading.

Synopsis:

Ari can't wait to move to Baltimore with his friends. He wants nothing more than to get out of his small seaside town. If only his dad would let him quit his job at the family bakery. While interviewing possible candidates, Ari meets Hector, an easy-going guy who loves baking. As the two work together in the bakery, love starts to bloom.
