October Wrap Up

Image
October was a super busy month for me! I'm super excited for Halloween tonight. I'm dressing up as Dean Winchester from Supernatural . Happy Halloween everyone! Book reviews: Mooncakes  by Suzanne Walker & Wendy Xu My rating: 5 stars Synopsis: Nova knows more about witchcraft than just about anyone her age. She spends her days working at her grandmothers' bookshop where she sells spell books and investigates the supernatural. One night, she catches wind of a white wolf. What Nova finds is her old childhood crush Tam, battling a horse demon. Tam is a werewolf who has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to find a home. Tam has no choice but to turn to Nova for help against the dark forces pursuing her. My review Hollow City  by Ransom Riggs My rating: 3 stars Series: Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children book 2 Synopsis:  After escaping Miss Peregrine's island, the children are at a loss. They have nothing but the clothes on their back. After...

October Book Haul

Image
I got so many new books this month I'm excited to read! About half of the books I got were graphic novels because I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately. Act Cool  by Tobly McSmith Act Cool  is a recent release that looks so good! Goodreads synopsis: Aspiring actor August Greene just landed a coveted spot at the prestigious School of Performing Arts in New York. There's only one problem: His conservative parents won't accept that he's transgender. And to stay with his aunt in the city, August must promise them he won't transition. August is convinced he can play the part his parents want while acting cool and confident in the company of his talented new friends. But who is August when the lights go down? And where will he turn when the roles start hitting a little too close to home?  A Tale of Sorcery by Chris Colfer Though I'm so excited to read the last book in the Tale of Magic  series, I am a little sad that Chris Colfer is taking a break from wri...

Catacomb by Madeleine Roux

Image
Dan, Abby, and Jorden have finally finished their senior year and left all the creepy events from Brookline behind. unfortunately, the past is not done haunting them. The three are off to New Orleans and are startled to learn that someone may be following them. To make things even worse, a secret gang is resurfacing and it'll take everything not to lose a limb to them. First off, Catacomb  was such a disappointing ending to the Asylum series. Each book seemed to get worse and worse. I still think Asylum was great, but Sanctum  and Catacomb  were a bit of a letdown. Catacomb  wasn't nearly as creepy as I was hoping for it to be. It was pretty predictable and I figured out who was behind everything as soon as he showed up in the book. However, there was one good plot twist that I would have liked to see explored more. I think Madeleine Roux is great at wrapping up her books. There are never any loose strings or questions I still have. Dan was so annoying in this ...

Dracula adapted by Russell Punter

Image
In Transylvania, evil lurks. Jonathan Harker goes to Dracula's castle on business, but he finds sinister creatures are occupying the space. A month later, Mina, Jonathan's finance, finds herself in a peculiar incident of her own. Her friend Lucy has been sleepwalking. Even worse, her blood has been disappearing and she has two strange bite marks on her neck. By this point in time, Count Dracula   has become a famous figure that almost every kid knows of. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but the story of Dracula  was so much different than I imagined. Regardless of my expectations, I really liked this graphic novel. I definitely want to read the original story of Dracula .  One of my favorite things about the Graphic Stories  series is there is background information of the story provided in the back of the book. Like Alice in Wonderland , there was information about the inspiration for the original story and the author's life. The author also touched a ...

A Map of Days by Ransom Riggs

Image
Having defeated the monstrous threat that nearly destroyed the peculiar world, Jacob Portman is back in Flordia. While exploring his grandfather's house with his peculiar friends, Jacob discovers a secret bunker. When his grandfather's old friend and fellow hallow ghast hunter, H, make contact with Jacob, the peculiar children are tasked to help save a peculiar in need. I loved being back in the peculiar world. It was so cool getting to see what this world's magic was like in America. A Map of Days  is a different cover than the other books and I miss the old black and white. The tan doesn't look as good. Emma was a little annoying in this book. Compared to the last three books in this series, she seemed more against Jacob. I'm starting to hate the romance in this series. I think it's so gross that Emma used to be in love with Jacob's grandfather. Nor was pretty cool, but I think Enoch is my favorite character. Don't get me wrong, Jacob's great and ...

Sanctum by Madeline Roux

Image
After a frighting summer at New Hampshire College, Dan and his friends are back at the university to investigate its latest mystery. After arriving, the trio discovers that the college grounds have been turned into a carnival. Adding onto the events that happened over the summer, the plot thickens as kidnapped women and secret society resurface. Dan, Abby, and Jorden are all past the point of no return and each wrong move could prove fatal. My biggest disappointment in Sanctum  was there were no creepy clowns. How do you write a book that takes place at a CARNAVAL with no creepy clowns? That's like horror 101 people. For real though, Sanctum was a pretty good sequel to Asylum . I don't think it was as interesting as its predecessor, but most sequels can't claim that they are. I found Dan's dreams annoying and eventually I just started skipping them. In the book, Dan and Abby are supposed to be dating but there are just some moments where I forgot they were even in a re...

5 spooky books to get you ready for Halloween

Image
My favorite holiday has always been Halloween. I love how spooky it is! October has   5.  The River Has Teeth  by Erica Waters The River Has Teeth  is a beautiful, gothic novel about witches and murder. There is no better combination for October. Synopsis:  Natasha's sister is missing. Her car was found abandoned on the edge of a nature reserve. When the case runs cold, Natasha's anger starts to rise. She's desperate to find answers and will do anything possible to get them, including turning the Lloyds for help. Della Lloyd's family has been gathering magic from the Bend. When Natasha appears on her doorstep, Della knows it will take more than a simple potion to help her. Della has her own secrets to hide though. She thinks the monster responsible for all the missing women in town is her mother. My review 4. Asylum by Madaline Roux The Asylum trilogy is so scary! This series will defintly keep you up at night wanting more.   Synopsis: Daniel Crawford ...

Asylum by Madeleine Roux

Image
Daniel Crawford is spending the summer doing the New Hampshire College Prep program (NHCP). NHCP is the chance of a lifetime. When Dan arrives he finds out that the normal dorms are closed and the students are forced to stay in the Brookline Dorm, which was formally a psychiatric hospital. In other words, Dan is staying in an insane asylum. At Brookline, Dan ends up meeting Abby and Jordan. Together the three discover secrets that will change their lives forever. I loved  Asylum . It was such a great book. The plot was constructed so well and I didn't see that ending coming at all! Everything wrapped up so nicely in the end and there were no loose strings.  I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I thought this book was going to be a little scary. It was still a pretty creepy book though. There were definitely times where my heart was beating faster than normal.   Dan was a pretty good main character. The only part of him that I didn't like was that he could get so jealous...

Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs

Image
After Jacob discovers a new ability he didn't think he had, he and his friends are racing against the clock to save the Peculiars from doom. They'll have to travel from modern-day London to the slums of Devil's Arce if they ever hope to make it out alive. I can't wait for  The Desolents of Devil's Arce  to come out! In preparation for the big release, I've been rereading the entire series. I just finished  Library of Souls  which could feel a little long at times. For the most part, I really enjoyed this book and am super excited to read  A Map of Days . One of my favorite things about the  Miss. Peregrines Peculiar Children  series are the photos included in the books. The old black and white photographs look so vintage and fit the story perfectly. It really makes the story come alive. Library of Souls is such a great book! It could feel a little long at times but Jacobs's journey to defeat the Whites is so entertaining. Once I sat down to read the bo...

Hollow City by Ransom Riggs

Image
After escaping Miss Peregrine's island, the children are at a loss. They have nothing but the clothes on their back. After finding out that all of Peculiardom are in danger, it's up to Jacob and his friends to save Peculiars around the world. First off, the ending was amazing! I love plot twists! Despite how great the ending was, the majority of Hollow City was pretty dull. There wasn't nearly as much action as there was in the first book of the  Miss. Peregrines Peculiar Children series.  One thing that I love about this series is the photographs included in the book! They're so cool and creepy and really make the story come alive. Something I do want to talk about is the fact these books are sold as "horror" books when infact there's nothing scary about this series. Sure the covers are a little creepy but the book itself is more of a typical fantasy.  I think out of all the books in this series, Hollow City is probably my least favorite. I remember bein...

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker & Wendy Xu

Nova knows more about witchcraft than just about anyone her age. The art in this book was amazing! I think it was so cute. The graphic novel as a whole was adorable. The characters felt so real! I saw so much of myself in Nova and I could definitely see similarities between Tem and one of my friends. Tam and Nova were such a cute couple and I loved their relationship. I loved  Mooncakes  so much and was able to complete it in a single sitting. This book is quick and perfect for getting out of a reading slump. This is definitely something I would go back and reread....

Image
There are so many amazing books comming out this fall and here are five I recommend. 5. All of Us Villains  by Amanda Foody & Christine Lynn Herman If you love The Hunger Games , then this book is for you!  Synopsis:  When the Blood Moon rises, the Blood Viel falls. The winner's family gets exclusive control over of all of the city's high magick, the most powerful resource in the world. Each champion is determined to win the Tournament and rewrite their story. A story that will be penned in blood. Mr review 4. The City Beautiful  by Aden Polydoros This is one of the best historical fictions I've read recently.
