Recent Reads

I've been procrastinating so much lately, so my recent reads post is a little late. School ended a week ago for me and I've been enjoying my summer break so far. In terms of reading, I'm in a little bit of a reading slump. The last two books I've read were a little dull. I took a long break from audiobooks for a while until reading Ruin and Rising, which was the start of my reading slump.

The Sky Blues by Robbie Couch

Dates read: June 2- June 4

I started off pride month with one amazingly queer book: The Sky Blues. I loved Sky! He was so adorable! The friendships in this book were amazing too!

Synopsis:

Sky is openly gay. Living in a small town, he's never been comfortable being himself around others. Sky decides to go full-throttle gay by asking out his crush, Ali Rashid, to prom. Sky has thirty days to put together the perfect promposal. When Sky's plans are leaked by an anonymous hacker in a homophobic e-blast. When his friends and classmates start to stand up for him, Sky starts to hunt down the hacker. But what will happen at the end of the thirty days? Will Sky really go through with his plan to ask Ali to prom?

Love and Other Natural Disasters by Misa Sugiura

Dates read: June 5- June 7

Love and Other Natural Disasters was full of tropes and I loved it! This rom-com included the fake dating trope, love triangles, and so much more.

Synopsis:

Nozomi Nagai has the perfect summer planned out. She has an internship at a museum in San Fransico. To make things better, she meets Willow who is beautiful, glamorous, and... heartbroken. When Willow asks Nozomi to fake date her to make her ex jealous, Nozomi says yes without a second thought. Nozomi has a plan of her own. If Nozomi could make Willow fall in love with her, then they wouldn't be fake dating anymore. But her lies start to pile up and Nozomi's genius plan takes a turn for the worst.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Dates read: June 7- June 8

This book was amazing! I wasn't really into the romance, but the characters were great.

Synopsis:

Ravka is divided by the Fold, a shadow casting the land beneath it in darkness. The Fold is also home to volcra, dangerous flying monsters. Alina Starkov has never felt like she belongs. When her regiment is attacked, Alina reveals a hidden power that she didn't even know existed. A power that could be settling a war that's been going on for centuries.

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Dates read: June 9- June 11

I finished another Leigh Bardugo book! The second book in the Grishaverse series was pretty good, but not as good as Shadow and Bone.

Synopsis:

After escaping from the Darkling, Mal and Alina are hunted across the True Sea. Alina finds that it becomes harder and harder for her to conceal her power and her identity as the Sun Summoner with each passing day. It isn't long before the Darkling reemerges from the fold with dangerous new power, forcing Alina to return to the country she abandoned. As her power grows, Alina can feel herself slipping away from Mal and towards the Darkling's grasps.

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

Dates read: June 11- June 15

I thought that this was such a boring book! Almost nothing happened. It was a lot longer than it had to be.

Synopsis:

Ravka's fate rests in the Sun Summoner's hands. She has to destroy the Fold and defeat the Darkling before it' too late. To do that, Alina will need to find Morozova's third amplifier. The firebird is the only thing that stands between her and saving Ravka.

Amber and Clay by Laura Amy Schlitz

Dates read: June 14- June 17

Like Ruin and Rising, Amber and Clay was so much longer than it had to be. A lot of this book was useless filler.

Synopsis:

Rhakos and Melisto live in acient Greece. Rhakos is a Thracian slave in a Greek household. Taken from his mother at a young age, he ends up in Athens. His only friend is Socrates. Melisto comes from a rich household. She's sent away to become one of Artemis's bears. The two have never met in the flesh, but by the time they do, one is a ghost.

The Threads of Magic by Alison Croggon

Dates read: June 17- June 19

The Threads of Magic felt way too rushed. There was no character development and the story was so bland.

Synopsis:

Pip lives in the city of Clarel. When he pickpockets a man, he acquires a stone heart in a silver casket. The heart begins to communicate with Pip. The royal officers who lost the heart would stop at nothing to get it back. Pip has unknowingly broken an ancient spell. What Pip doesn't know is a war between Specters and witches has been brewing for ages.
