Kate Brighton and her father had everything. They even lived in the castle. Then one day, Hale Brighton tried to assassinate the high king of Rime. After being cast out of nobility, Kate now works for the Relay, the royal carrier service. Only fast and skilled riders can survive the Relay and make it back to the cities before night. When night comes, the nightdrakes- flightless dragons- come out to hunt. Both a blessing and a curse, Kate was born a wilder. She has the power to though and persuade the minds of animals. Wilder magic is outlawed in Rime though. Because of her wilder magic, Kate is able to find an attacked caravan, massacred by drakes. The only survivor she finds is Corwin Tomme, the high prince of Rime. Years ago Kate promised herself that she would never let him into her life again- not after he sentenced her father for execution. Now with their paths once more crossed, Kate and Corwin must face the threat rising against them, their friends, and all of Rime.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down! I love the story so much. While the story was in the third person, the chapters ended up switching between Corwin and Kates's point of view. Reading the story from their different views made all the more enjoyable.
I do love the romance going on between Kate and Corwin, I do wish there was more romance with another set of characters. They obviously loved cared for each other so I hope I get to see their relationship grow in the sequel, Shadow and Flame, as well as Kates and Corwin's. Well, the story was well written, some of the systems of magic were a bit hard to follow. Mainly the different ranks of magists and what the different colored robes do.
In all, this might just be one of my favorite books ever.
