The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray

Image
It's been a year since Gemma Doyle arrived at Spence. After saving the Realms from the Poppy soldiers, Gemma forges herself to the Realm's magic. Now, Gemma approaches her London debut, the Order and the Rashkanna are fighting for control of the Realms. It seems like questions follow everywhere Gemma goes. Why now is Spence's East Wing finally being rebuilt? What's going on with Pippa? Calling this book mediocre would be too generous. It was awful! The second book in this series was amazing and it got my hopes up very high for this book. I didn't like  The Sweet Far Thing at all.  For the most part, this book was really boring. I'm just glad this series is finally over. This 800-page book was much longer than it needed to be. There were some parts that were obviously added in to make the book longer. Despite the length, Gemma didn't even accomplish what she needed to do. She won a battle, not the war. The characters in this series are just awful. Gemma was ...

Rebel Angels by Libba Bray

Christmas has finally arrived and Gemma Doyle can't wait to get away from Spence Academy. Gemma is eager to spend time with her friends in London and see her family. Before she can even ring in the New Year though, Gemma and her friends are facing a new danger threatening the Realms. At the same time, Gemma has seemed to catch the eye of the charming Simon Middleton. I read this series out of order- opps. So Rebel Angels  is actually the first book in the Gemma Doyle  trilogy I read and I really enjoyed it. I considered giving this book 4 stars but decided on 3. Rebel Angels  is much more entertaining than the first book in this series. The characters in this book are also so much better! Considering the time period, Gemma has a lot of spunk. She is very stubborn and has zero self-control. That last part does get annoying at times. Gemma is maybe too stubborn though. She does the opposite of everything people tell her to do and most of the time, it ends badly. Felic...

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

After the murder of her mother, Gemma Doyle is shipped off to Spence Academy in England. Gemma starts getting strange visions of the future. To make things worse, a strange man has been watching her. As Gemma embraces her newfound power, she starts to uncover the dark secrets surrounding Spence. I kind of read this series out of order, but let's just ignore that tiny fact. The main reason I decided to read this book is because I've heard so many great things about Libba Bray's books! I found this book and the third one at Reread Books for a total of $10. I got book 2 for free so I figured might as well read the whole trilogy! A Great and Terrible Beauty left me a little disappointed. As usual, I'll start off by talking about what I liked. A Great and Terrible Beauty  is a gothic fantasy set in 1893, England. The plot of this book was super intriguing. I liked getting to investigate the mystery of Mary Dowd through reading her journals. Though it was a little slow, I th...
